I had gone to The Gambia with one thing in mind, to see the wildlife, especially birds. I knew I wouldn't see much. I didn't know the country, I would have to be a tourist. With the case close to 20 kgs the heavy bird book stayed at home - it was a case of point the camera, snap, and sort it out later. In the event that was the best decision. I am still trying to take in just how many species I have seen. An osprey fishing far in the distance but clear against the blue sky; I just wonder - could it have been one of the Welsh ospreys? Two red-necked falcons tight against the fans of a rhun palm and most astonishing as I can't even remember it being pointed out - either a lizzard buzzard or goshawk high in the treetops.
My first picture of a red billed hornbill wasn't the best (the second is much better) but it was a magic moment in a week full of magic moments.
