Roman Egypt
‘A province difficult of access, prolific in grain, contentious and mercurial because of superstition and licence, knowing no restraints of laws, having no experience of magistrates.’ So wrote Tacitus, an educated Roman,
in his Histories Book1, chapter 11. Not the sort of publicity to give the Roman people a balanced or happy picture of Egypt. Fortunately Egypt was also a source of fascination for many wealthy Romans, including several Emperors. But whether accepting of Egypt or the subject satire, Egypt has today given to the world
not only temple and city sites but also the richest collection of papyrus to come from one country. Written mainly in Greek, the vast majority of the papyri come not from the Ptolemies but from Roman Egypt, offering an amazing window into the lives of the ordinary people. With material from both archaeology and the papyri this course will seek to discover something of the early centuries of Roman Egypt before the rise of Byzantium.
