Egypt: American Excavations in Egypt
With "Mariette’s appointment [in 1858] as head of the Service des Antiquitiés [more properly Director of Egyptian Monuments]", ancient Egyptian archaeology began to blossom. Gone were the haphazard (if often exciting and dramatic) years of consuls and agents; Mariette had instituted a much firmer grip on firmans – the formal authorisation for excavation. Although private (and wealthy) individuals could also be allocated firmans, universities and museums began to lead the way in excavation. A more scholarly approach began to be made in excavation (although not always successfully). American Egyptologists, arriving much later than their European counterparts, nevertheless made a significant impact on the discovery of Egypt’s ancient past.
