Archaeology of the Delta
When Walter Bryan Emery first began to excavate huge Dynasty 1 mastaba tombs at North Saqqara, little did he know the controversy which would surround these tombs for many years to come. Such was the quality of the grave goods, including items with royal names, Emery firmly believed these were ‘cenotaph’ tombs, a ‘cenotaph’ for the king of Lower Egypt, the royal burial itself at Abydos. The debate then raged between the often smaller royal tombs at Abydos being the actual burial place of the king, or the lavish burials at North Saqqara. In fact we know today North Saqqara were the tombs of high officials, often close relatives of the king. This course will also look at less well-known sites both in the Delta itself and close by modern Cairo at the apex to the Delta, some only now beginning to be excavated. Do join us as we explore together this new course: Archaeology of the Delta. A warm welcome awaits.
