Egypt: Pharaoh's People
From time immemorial, as family groups became small village communities, one person would became more prominent within that community, possibly because of the wisdom of age, possibly because he had shown great prowess in hunting, possibly simply because of the family he was born into. As ancient Egypt developed from small village communities, the local chief became a more powerful ruler, both as (originally sole) priest and as leader. By the beginning of Dynastic Egypt a ‘pyramid’ was born, from the king through to the peasants. It was Pharaoh alone however who was responsible for the security of the country and for provisioning his people. Inevitably a (sometimes top-heavy) administration grew up to support the sovereign.
