Each tomb had an outer and an inner chamber, as well as a small window that was probably created by later occupants. The inner chambers had large, cleanly cut shafts. In one tomb there was a second shaft on the south side of the outer chamber. In another there was a false door at each end of the outer chamber. Some had small niches which could have carried a lamp, or been for cultic purposes. The whole surrounding area was a burial area of pit graves, and littered with flints, pottery sherds and some small hand-tools.
At no part of this trip did we feel we were in danger. A few local children were intrigued, and some adults wondered whether we had come in search of antiquites, but accepted the explanation that we were British professional archaeologists and were looking only.
We each picked up a single sample from the millions of sherds and flints on the site. I will bring mine in to class.
Comments ely destroyede, with a very few stones still left on site. While an excavation here might make more good discoveries it would probably not be financially viable.
