The Amarna Archives
‘To the king my lord’; the Amarna Archive, discovered by chance somewhere close by the building which is now popularly known as the Records Office at Amarna, ancient Akhetaten, in Middle Egypt has long been a source of fascination. Who were these kings and petty princes? What do we know about the countries they ruled? Do the letters reflect a true historical situation or are they simply squabbling amongst themselves, writing to Egypt in the hope of a positive response against their enemy of the moment, whoever that enemy may be (including sometimes their own brothers!). This course sets out to explore the countries and the people who wrote to Egypt during the reigns of Amenophis III and his son and successor Akhenaten and to set the Amarna Archive in the context of the wider world.
