Art in Ancient Egypt
When we think of art from ancient Egypt we think of wonderful often vibrant tomb reliefs and paintings, usually from the Old Kingdom onwards. Some scenes appear static, the same scenes from the same pattern books copied for two thousand years and more with little change. Yet ancient Egyptian art began in pre-dynastic times, before the advent of writing, on pottery, in Eastern and Western Desert rock art, cosmetic palettes, as well as the amazing Tomb 100 at Hierakonpolis.
With painting and sculpture, art includes beautiful stone pieces. Early examples of copper statues have also come down to us. From pre-dynastic times to Greek and Roman times there is both a thread and a diversity in ancient Egyptian art.
Come, make new friends, and discover something of ancient Egypt’s rich and varied art forms and the wonderful material both in Egypt and in museums around the world.
