Middle Kingdom Egypt
Middle Kingdom Egypt
From Pre-dynastic times to the Greek Period there was throughout all of ancient Egypt’s rich and varied history a symbolism and meaning bound up in the concept of the Two Lands, the Red Land (the desert) and the Black Land (the Nile Valley and the Delta). Sometimes the link between one time-period and another is easy to see (New Kingdom birth scenes with Greek mamissi), at other times the link is very different (the two Khasekhemwy enclosures with later temple scenes). Sometimes the link is modified to meet a different need (Old Kingdom dwarf scenes with the household deity Bes). This course will look at special elements from temples, tombs and artefacts, many sites taken from Study Tours to Egypt and open to the public, to try to look more closely as both the ‘specialness’ and the changes within ancient Egypt’s long and varied history from pre-dynastic Nagada to Greek times.
