Summer 2011
Egypt: ’Digging Diaries’ – For the Love of Egypt
Egypt: ’Digging Diaries’ – For the Love of Egypt
Part of the title for the Summer Term’s course comes from the Bulletin of the Egyptian Exploration Society ‘Digging Diary’, part comes from a conversation I had recently with a member of one of our excavation missions who said: ‘Everything I do for eleven months is about one month in Egypt’. ‘I love Egypt and I love excavation’.
When we think of excavation in Egypt we think of excavations which become icons in archaeology such as the discovery of Tutankhamun, but in any season there are a large number of missions, both local and foreign, operating quietly throughout Egypt. Each week, this course will focus on one or two recent ‘digs’, bringing together the known and documented history of the excavation or survey site with the newly available material, linking it to the wider history of the country. Excavation sites will be throughout the Nile Valley and the Delta and also if appropriate in the Oases. Time periods will reflect Egypt’s long and varied history. Whether in class or via the resources section of Mercia Egyptology Society, links to the missions’ own internet resources will be provided, and where possible, relevant photographs and site plans will be made available. Class discussion and students’ own photographs will also be valued aspects to the course. Come and discover something of Egypt’s rich and varied archaeology and the amazing excavation material both past and present.
