Most on the West Bank had not even heard of the violence here on Saturday evening. It was an isolated incident, but will not help tourism in the short term.
No pictures today, so I will spill the beans on what has gone on this summer.
Tayib's bank wanted a monthly payment on the car, and called round at midnight. He was in the gaol for a week alongside a Palestinian drug dealer and a Chinese with no passport or visa. Not very pleasant in the middle of summer, but he seems to have survived, until the next time.
But he still finds it difficult to believe that the tourists will not be back any time soon. He still uses his car several times a day to run errands, do a single piece of shopping or return a favour. And he thinks that he can afford to send his oldest son to private catering/hotel college rather than let him go into the army for national service straight away. As generous as I may be, I am not prepared to help here, as I know that his Moslim faith means that he will always help those worse off than himself. For me charity begins at home.
The local school were very appreciative of about £25 of pens and pencils. At least these get through to their intended destination, and I will continue to carry as much as I can.
Maybe tomorrow's blog will be a bit more interesting.
