Fortunately, Tayaeb managed to locate a guardian, who soon arrived with the key. Apparently I was the first visitor this month!
This custodian was happy to leave me to my own studies rather than pointing out the obvious as is so often the case, but he nodded approvingly at my camera. After some considerable time I finally located proof of the tomb owner's name, high on a wall, and readers can check the accompanying image. There were several chambers, mostly covered with columns of raised hieroglyphs and generally in good condition. Two modern wooden doors prevented access to who knows what from one of these rooms.
Ascending the flight of steps, I was able to adequately tip this helpful guardian, and he probably returned to his place of slumber.
I enjoyed my 90 minutes at Assassif, and will go back when I have my son with me - he can take the piccys that I've skipped. The backsheesh at TT414 may have been on the mean side, but my explanation that I was a poor student was accepted. I almost feel guilty as it must be a hard life being custodian of tombs that nobody visits, or probably even knows about.
The price was right - I didn't have to pay for the whole party!
I'll be adding this new establishment to my West Bank list once I have more details - I'm going there for dinner tomorrow and hope to photograph the rooms. I've requested lamb, so this little bleater had better watch out!
