Later I went up to Hapy Habou, where the is usually a cooling breeze. Very soon the scaffolding crew moved in to erect a large tent/marquee on the waste ground behind the police "station". A 92 year old had died in the neighbourhood, so their would be 3 days of loud mourning. This tent was for the men: the women had another one the other side of the mosque.
Dickers were carried in from the nearby houses and businesses. Amplifiers and loudspeakers appeared and were tested. They don't count one, two, three, four, five. Instead "Allah" is the word used to check that the sound is o.k., and the reverberation gives at least 4 echoes.
The men began to arrive in large numbers, and at 5pm the wake began. I had to wait 20 minutes more as Tayeb gave his condolences to the family and friends assembled. I will be avoiding this area until Friday, when normality returns.
