Sunset over Luxor
One of the most iconic sights is Egypt is a sunset over the Nile. As Re moves gently into the west to sail through the afterworld in his sacred barque, a wonderful sense of peace descends. On this particular evening sunset was enhanced by the simple sight of a small fishing boat.

Standing by the railings at the Sonnesta St George overlooking the river, several people were watching the sunset, each absorbed in the peace and beauty of the evening. The two fishermen were throwing a trawl net over the side. It was possible to see the line of the net because suddenly a fish or two would jump out of the water air to avoid the mesh. This would have been magical enough in itself, but suddenly a small flock of birds flew down the river, highlighted wonderfully against the reddening sky. A few minutes later a second flock and then a third all heading towards Karnak Temple. A Scottish visitor stood by me told me the cormorants had a roost just a bit further down from Karnak at an island close by the Hilton Hotel. As we were talking quietly, just above out heads a kite suddenly hovered, every detail of its wings clear in the evening sky. Earlier in the evening I had been told of a kingfisher roost in a 'building' which jutted out into the river just at the side of the Sonnesta pool area. I counted 40 black and white kingfishers before the light faded. It was just a magical hour.
