What interested me was one chamber in probably the newest part of the complex. It dates to about 2600BC (think Djoser’s step pyramid). The walls of this apse are about 8 vertical, well shaped stones (in a country without metal tools or even flint). The next row above these comprises 8 neatly shaped stones that are corbelled inwards. The books say that these may have been to support a roof, maybe of wood and hides, but then why would the upper surface of these stones slope inwards? I would suggest that this was to support more corbelled stones making a complete domed roof. The upper levels, being at field level, would have been taken away and reused as building material elsewhere.
