I have received a link to an interesting Pathe film about Egypt from 1940-49. I will gather together all these old documentaries sometime when I'm back home. This one has shots of everyday life in the countryside. I watched some more fishing at Blue Sky. I took some HD video of a successful Pied Kingfisher sortie, but will have to pre-process it before loading it on YouTube for you. Yes another scorcher, and the end of the week will be 43C again. Too warm for archaeology, but there are one or two small sites that I will attempt. Some work has been done at the Mortuary Temple of Siptah (between Meremptah and Ramesseum) and a single statue has been re-erected there. I will also go out to Deir esh-Shelwet and photograph the interior of the temple of Isis. I have more or less abandoned a visit to the Temple of Mut, although I will try to discover the charge and access arrangements. I am sure that tickets will be issued at Karnak, but hope that it may be possible to park by the temple. A visit to the tomb of Stan is also on the cards - he probably needs another Stella and some Cleopatra by now.

Why do herons, even beautiful ones like squacco, look so misreable? If I had the time I'd offer to do a bird one for the folk who want the gardens article, but they need it mid June so can't stretch to it. I downloaded the Butzer pdf file. It's one of the few times I wish I had a kindle. Balancing the netbook on my knee reading is it a bit of a feat. I can see why it's such a seminal work but the writing style is so easy to read. Now I've got a dozy question. Any chance of a photo of a well? Barry's given me permission to use the Amarna tomb shaduf drawing so that covers that. A well could be quite useful.

I'm on the cadge. Knowing you might be somewhere near Aboudi's at some time or another (or even Deir el Medina) is there a chance you could see if you could get me a cheap book on Egyptian flora? There is a 3 set volume (too expensive). I just want something 1 volume that doesn't break the bank. I already have Accor Hotels useful little booklet (don't ask!) but something like the little birds book would be excellent. Have now really got stuck into the gardens article and enjoying it.

The Pathe news filler is excellent. I'd forgotten how good Pathe news used to be. Is there any way of taking a still from it?

While it is possible to take a still from a video the quality will be very poor. Not really usable at above thumbnail size.

Pity (stills). It has to be book printable as well so probably no use though might ask you to give it a whirl. Wells with water (or a tree in to show where water was/is) more useful. Also a more specialised query. Your photo tomorrow (!) of the bird in the acacia gave me the idea. If you stay still long enough by an acacia could you see if you could manage a bird in it that is clear (the one you uploaded is just slightly out of kilter) and with its head and beak on too! There's a wonderful little doorway scene in Benia of a bird in an acacia but my slide is blurred. As Benia is easy access would baksheesh enable one in the tomb?

I may not be spending much time by the acacia this afternoon - 44C.

o.k., Benna is open, and I do not have any evidence of a previous visit in my photo collection. I may give it a try before breakfast. It is in the group with Userhet and Ramose.
