Later, at Aboudi's bookshop I was the only customer - except that I didn't buy anything. They have changed the layout, possibly for security so that the man on the till has a better view of the whole shop. A 50% sale on a limited range of books had nothing that I desperately needed. It was hot and sticky indoors - no air conditioning.
Police checkpoints seemed slightly more alert and smart - there was obviously an inspection or important visitor due. At Hapy Habou a captain of police arrived at about 1700. The group all posed for photographs, so I took some too!
Power went off for an hour or so at about 1730. I tried to take some pictures of the stars, but could not get the camera to focus. There must be a way of forcing it to infinity - must rtfm!
When I got to Fayrouz around 2000 the power was off in Gezira. But Fayrouz has a good, though noisy, generator. The students that I saw there on Sunday were still taking up most of the tables with their laptops. They seemed to be a mix of nationalities, but were mainly communicating in English. There was some quiet background music playing when the power returned, but I cannot put a name to the tunes. Definitely not Egyptian though! Almost pleasant, although in a minor key.
