The wind got up a bit in the afternoon but it stayed hot, so I ate indoors at Cafe Makane in New Qurna. This is a lounge cafe which serves pizza so the seating is uncomfortably low and there are television screens everywhere showing "lounge music" except when football is available.
The pizza was unusual - I can see why Americans call it a pie. At first I thought that it was more like a quiche, but it did not have a soggy bottom. The base was an un-levened pastry that was more than capable of taking the load above.
I wanted to try the bisturma pizza (assuming this was a reference to a Greek spicy sausage) but this was not available. So I had one with salami instead. It comes in 3 sizes: 20, 24 and 30cm. I chose the smallest, which was more than enough for 1.
The topping was quite simple - the only extra ingredient apart from the cheese, tomato and salami (or a similar local sliced sausage) was green olives.
I decided not to hang around for an ice-cream as the seats were so poor.
Oh, and the cookery book was in the apartment. 100 pages of simple recipes, clearly explained in American English. The only unusual ingredient appears to be Mastic. I assume that this is used mainly as a binding agent.
I don't remember seeing this book before, and it is not on Amazon.co.uk. I have another book by the same author though. See Amazon.com for more details.
