Thomson flight to Birmingham was on time and half empty - this was the first flight of the winter timetable, so people were returning after 11 days, not the usual 7 or 14 (Thomson had switched from Monday to Friday for their weekly flight).
Because there was some major event at NEC I had not been able to book an overnight in an airport hotel at an acceptable price, but had instead booked Premier Inn by New Street station. Arrived there about 2245 - the only lift was broken, my room was on the 4th floor and breakfast was in the basement. These was not even a porter for my bags. I did not stay, but instead caught the last bus (2315 on Fri or Sat) home to Worcester. I had been looking forward to a good late dinner and a full English breakfast, but c'est la vie.
When I got home at about 0030 on Sat 9th I discovered that the FCO travel warnings for most of Egypt had been lifted. Luxor is now deemed safe.
